about
Welcome to the Essentials of Homeschooling. I’m Sharon Hancock. I’ve been a homeschool teacher for 18 years (still going) and have more than 20 years experience as a writer, editor, and freelancer.
I’m a native Floridian who swapped her flip flops for snow boots upon moving to Colorado with my husband. Turns out I didn’t need to: Folks in Colorado wear sandals year round—they just add socks in the winter. We've since lived in a few different states and now reside near Washington, D.C., with our two children. Our oldest is in college and our youngest is in high school.
Throughout our years of homeschooling we've met hundreds of wonderful families who are all on a quest for the best education for their kids. We've seen there are as many different ways to homeschool as there are personalities. And yet one principle stands true across the board: The heart of homeschooling is not the academics; it's the intangibles that influence and mold our children, the things that enable them to grow, mature, and succeed, to dream big and accomplish much.
If you're a homeschooler or simply exploring the possibility, I hope you’ll connect with Essentials of Homeschooling. Check out the blogs that delve deeper into different aspects of homeschooling. Sign up for a regular email and free resources. And join in the conversation. Together we can help each other thrive and succeed in our homeschool journeys.
